We are talking sitcoms here.....I have searched high, I have searched low, heck I have even given Fox a chance. And there are none left. Tonight I watched CBS even though all of my beloved sitcoms have come from NBC and NOTHING! "Still Standing" "King of Queens" and "According to Jim" are all the same, fat guy, with skinny wife and the wife's annoying family member. Dont care for "How I Met Your Mother" "Big Bang Theory" and dont care for but the best out of all of em is "Two and a Half Men" The make a big deal about Charlie Sheen making $350,000 per episode since the show is so good where as Sean Hayes was making $600,000 per episode for "Will and Grace" and he didnt even play the main character!
My favortie show was "Will and Grace" that ended in 2006 and picture the equivilant of if Trisha retired for REAL and never came back. That is how my TV life feel lol. I also liked Fraiser a bit and the Golden Girls and all those early 90s shows......remember TGIF? None are left are there? And if there are any LET ME KNOW!

Well, it depends on what you like......
I watch HOUSE, Don't Forget the Lyrics, American Idol, Boston Legal - sometimes, CSI - Miami...., Just depends on what you're in the mood for watching. Depends on which kid is here too..... lol and what the hubby wants to watch.
My oldest is in to Nascar (weekends) when he is visiting - which I don't like (he's 23), my next one is into anything (he's 20)...... and my teen is into anything teenager and what's "hip".......and if I let her watch it! lol.......
not a lot of help here......... Not much on regular tv as far as sitcoms...... imo

I'd love to find an "intelligent" sitcom.... sorta like Murphy Brown in its early years... a show that relies on topical humor and not inuendo or bathroom humor... not that some of that isn't funny, but most of it isn't.... not to me anyway.... looking at some shows I wish those writers had just stayed on strike.... lol....
Btw, we watch the Law & Order shows.... Nascar.... ER.... and I guess that's it? Seems like I'm missing something....

I don't claim to know anything, but...it is my opinion that these things are cyclical, such that--after you have some years where you have some good, well-written sitcoms--you have at least two, maybe three years where the comedies are bland and not memorable. It's always hard to come up with new ideas and/or ways to make old material fresh (ie, mother-in-law jokes), and then the writers probably get sometimes a little writer's block in trying to avoid to doing, for example, what Seinfeld did in this episolde, or what Will & Grace did in that one. So, what I think is that you have two or three years of bad shows so that you have time to forget. (I know that the more popular shows get shown in repeats, but who has time to watch them every day--or any day, for that matter?)
I also think that it can also depend on what's happening in the real world; the economy is worse right now, the gas prices are up, and it's harder to find stuff to laugh about. Comedy is supposed to lighten the mood, to help you not take life so seriously...but when the future seems so uncertain, it's harder to relax. Jokes about just "getting by", for example, aren't quite as funny when that's the reality that surrounds you all of the time.

Some of the summer shows which will be returning soon have a humorous touch even if they're not sitcom. The show "Burn Notice" with Actors Bruce Campbell(Xena: Warrior Princesss,Brisco County Jr.),and Sharon Gless(Cagney and Lacey) is a spy-type story with a twist .
A show I like, several, includes the two -hour mysteries"Mystery Woman"(Clarenence Willians III and Kelly Martin)which is a weekend rotating movie series about a young woman who owns a Mystery book store in a small town, but doesn't stop at reading &selling them. She usually is instrumental in solving problems. It,too, has a homey since of humor. You can see it on Hallmark if you have the hallmark channel.
A movie I recommend with tons of humor is"Alvin and the Chipmunks" which is now on DVD.

I think your right, the sitcoms were kinda lagging you had the same old same old, then Will and Grace comes along with a gay guy and a straight woman and it was something never done before. And it was hilarious. Debra Messing(Grace) and Eric McCormack(Will) were funny but gave it the drama needed and Sean Hayes(Jack) and Megan Mullally(Karen) gave it massive comedy, they were funny as can be and NOONE else on TV was anything like them. Yet they could make you laugh one minute and cry the next. Hopefully the next cycle is coming soon. Sadly I didnt appreciate Will and Grace till about 2005 during syndication. I at least caught some of Season 8 when it originally aired but very saddened it had to end.

Oh Cory I just LOVED Will and Grace. I remember when it started here in 97 or 98 (ugh, if only I had known of Trisha and Garth then) anyway.... my son was in the junior fire brigade and it was always when W&G were on and I would miss bits of it. Drove me nuts!
The character combo was wonderful and they couldn't have chosen better actors to portray them. Surely there has never been a greater drama queen than Jack!
My absolute favourite scene was when Cher guest starred and Jack thought it was a drag queen LOL. Priceless.
As for other sitcoms, I too loved Murphy Brown and Frasier. I quite enjoy the ever bumbling dramas for Doug in King of Queens Although this show is usually only aired during our Summer as a 'fill in' show in the non rating period and is often not on due to one of our sporting events. So that's a tad frustrating.
As for dramas, I love love loved Northern Exposure! The quirkiness, the fun, the drama, it had it all in a sweet homely manner.
When I can I watch Law and Order SVU. Love the characters and the acting is top notch.
But above and beyond all of the above was my favourite show of all time.... the critically acclaimed and sadly short lived (3 seasons)... 'Once and Again' starring Sela Ward and Billy Campbell. It was on your ABC from 99-02. No tv show has ever affected me the way O&A did. The storyline cut very close to home at times and the acting quality was phenomenal. It was created by the same people who gave us thirtysomething and My So Called Life.
As for childhood memories, who could go past HR Puf n Stuff!!! LOL

I love Will and Grace too! I watch the reruns of it on Lifetime TV now. They usually come on at 11 pm and I will lay in bed and crack up laughing. You are right when u say Jack and Karen add to it to make it the great comedy that it was.

I have to admit, there aren't too many shows on main tv that I watch these days. I do like the dancing show, but I think that's about it.
As for sitcoms, like others here - I like the ones that were smart and funny, and made you look at just a little bit of life. One of my favorites was (I think the name was this) Sports Desk? It was about sports news like ESPN, but had real wit and humor mixed with intelligence and real life. The program director on the show was the actor who played "Benson". They even wrote about the fact that he suffered a stroke. It was always fast paced, and you had to pay attention to understand the humor as well as story line. But I loved it!
I also watched Will & Grace as well as Murphy Brown. But I have to admit, I loved "Friends" too. Another show that I love catching in re-runs is "Mash"! Again, wit and humor mixed with real life and hard issues.
A lot of these you can actually buy as sets now and just sit down and watch good tv without screaming at some of the really awful stuff they have on television now!
If I am going to watch my tv, a lot of the time it is on Food Network or shows like that! lol!

Oh we LOVED that show... Sports Night was the name... not only did it have Robert Guillaume of Benson, but it also starred Peter Krause, Josh Charles and Felicity Huffman... we bought the series box set a few years ago and loved seeing it all again.... the same people who created it also created The West Wing, which was, like Sports Night, smart and funny, and a big favorite of ours too.... the first four seasons of that were as good as ANY drama on American TV, before or after, IMHO... lol...
We don't watch that much TV anymore because truthfully, most of it sucks... we do watch the Law & Order shows (the mothership and it's offspring... lol), and ER, though if next year weren't its last, I doubt we'd stick it out... and Friday Night Lights... as for dramas no longer with us, we loved Homicide: Life On The Street and Homefront to name a couple... I'd forgotten about Once and Again, but that was a good show....
I can't remember the last sitcom we watched regularly.... we do occasionally watch Will & Grace in reruns.... but ya know... Murphy Brown may be the last one we watched regularly and how many years (decades?) ago was it on? sigh....

Will and Grace was the finest TV show to come out of the 90's in my opinion, sure others were more popular but Will and Grace just had what was needed for perfect comedy. And all 4 actors could make you sad just as easily as they could make you cry! I am going to have to send you some PMs with cool videos.
I cant wait any longer for Season 8 to come out. I think it has come out in Australia and Europe but I dont think my DVD player would play those DVDs not sure

I recently became a huge SCRUBS fan. I started watching the reruns late at night and I"m hooked. I haven't had a favorite sitcom since Friends retired. The scrubs characters are all well written and interesting on their own. It's a great show, and my favorite thing, no laugh track.
I know how you feel about losing a show you loved, I'm still in mourning over the

This is why I don't have a cable. Well, and I'm never home to watch it.

But I do have Netflix.

And own most seasons of Will & Grace and Friends - so I can fall back on that.
Bascially, I'm no help whatsoever with this - so why exactly am I posting?

Aren't DVD's universal when playing them as opposed to VHS? The packaging is sometimes different.
One show you can get that is fun is" Reba" on DVD.
Sometimes, too, there is humor in other types of shows such as adventure, action, etc. which enhances a series.
