BILOXI (WLOX) -- It's a humanitarian effort that's been going on for a quarter of a century. Since 1976 more than a million people have benefited from the generosity of Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat is continuing its mission work on the coast and Sunday night the ambassadors of the organization helped kickoff the 2008 build. It was a who's who of government officials and celebrities.
"We have a lot to be proud of and we have a lot more to do. Now let's get about the task of doing it," said Senator Roger Wicker.
Former Senator John Edwards as well as the Mississippi Mass Choir were among the guests at the 2008 opening ceremonies for the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project.
"I look at myself for being one of the most fortunate people in the world, to have been the leader of this country but to have been associated with Habitat for Humanity," said President Carter.
President and Mrs. Carter along with thousands of Habitat Volunteers are on the coast to help put more families back in their homes.
"I am proud that first 'Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project' is here in the Gulf area where people have suffered so much and the need is so great," said Mrs. Carter.
It's that spirit of volunteerism that garnered the support of country mega stars Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks.
"We believe like you that everyone deserves to have a home that is decent and affordable and a place to go home at night," Yearwood said.
The country mega stars say the drive of the Carters inspired them to volunteer.
"These guys realize that there is a hell of a lot of life left, and I think they have done more since the White House than they ever got to do inside the White House," said Brooks.
That's why the superstars are trading their microphones for hammers in hopes of moving more families back into their homes.
"When we all leave here, if you're the one getting the house, I'm the one getting the bigger blessing," Brooks said.
This week volunteers will build 10 new homes in Biloxi, finish 10 in Pascagoula and rebuild 30 homes in Gulfport.
