TRISHA AT A GLANCE
Spotlight: Music Yearwood shares a glimpse of her personal life

Updated: 06/08/08 6:52 AM

You, your mother, Gwen Yearwood, and your sister, Beth Yearwood Bernard, recently wrote “Georgia Recipes for an Oklahoma Kitchen: Recipes from My Family to Yours” (Clarkson Potter). Why did you choose to do this project?

I was asked to write an autobiography, and I didn’t want to do that. So they said, “What kind of book do you want to write?” I love to cook, I have a passion for it. I love people hanging out in the kitchen. My mom and my sister are both great cooks; these recipes came from my mom, and her mom. The idea evolved into family cookbook, almost like a scrapbook, about our family. It’s very personal; stories, intertwined with the recipes we grew up on.

Do you have a favorite memory that relates to the book?

I favor the salty dishes, meat and potatoes. One of the first things I learned to make was my mom’s potato salad. When I left home, it was the first time I made something of hers, that tasted like hers, and I said “I can do this, I can make food that I grew up on!” It’s comfort food. When you miss home, cook a dish and it takes you right back.

Who inspires you?

I continue to be inspired by my parents; they were great role models –happily married for 45 years. They encouraged me to follow my dreams. They never said, “You’re crazy for wanting to be a singer.” That’s big for a child to be supported like that.

What music are you listening to now?

I listen to a big variety, from George Jones to Prince.

I recently downloaded every Lori McKenna song I could find. She’s a singer-songwriter I did some shows with.

What are your guilty pleasures?

Well, with three young girls, we don’t watch too much TV, but I caught an episode of “The Biggest Loser,” and I became obsessed with it. And when “Sex and the City” was running, I would go hide to watch it.

Describe your perfect day off.

Sleep until you wake up (around 11). Have a cup of coffee, and ease into the day. When I’m busy, I love to be very busy. And when I’m off, I like to be really off. Stay-in-your-pajamas off.

Cool article...thanks for posting it. smile.gif

The Sex And the City thing is not quite as surprising, since she does have one song on the soundtrack (though I'm not suggesting that she only watched it to see her song come on).

As far as the pajama thing...I don't think I could go quite that far, but on days that I don't go to work and know absolutely for sure that I'm not going out, I'll wear some of my more comfortable (but maybe a little holey) clothes. smile.gif It's kind of weird, but I think that even if I were retired and had no reason to go out, I still wouldn't want to wear pajamas during the day...it just wouldn't feel right to me.
