For any horse racing fans today at Belmont Park in New York
the third part of the triple crown races took took place.
Many horses who ran the Kentucky Derby and/or the Preakness(Maryland) weren't entered in the Belmont Stakes since there was not going to be a triple crown winner this year, and other factors.
There were only 7 horses in today's Belmont Stakes compared to about 20 in the Kentucky Derby.
Interestingly, one of them was a fillie(young female horse) by the name of Rags To Riches.
Besides having a good bloodline(A.P. Indy horse) this fillie was very sleek and beautiful, and according to trainer, jockey, etc. who were well aquainted with her she "had an attitude".
The last fillie to win the Belmont Stakes was Tanya in 1905.Rags to Riches made it look easy as she ran neck in neck with Curlin slightly edging him out for the win(even after stumbling out of the gate).
Curlin was the winner of the Preakness.
So,after a 102 years pass another fillie is crown champion.
I guess her independent attitude gave her most of the drive she needed.

I saw the review of this on the news Saturday night. I was so glad she won! What a great race it was too! Thanks Crystal for the info, I was bummed that I missed the race.

WE missed it also...

.....I was at work and DAN was working on our roof...I am so happy a Filly finally won again...Sometimes I wonder if the Owners and trainers put tooo munch into the Studs and neglect the Filly's...I would say more, but don't want to offend anyone...LOL...Attitudes in the Stables...( at a track in Oklahoma) when we went to the Races and was looking to bet on a claim race..

I was raised in Northern Kentucky - and up there you get into horse racing rather than Nascar.......I had never heard of Nascar until I moved south. We fortunately were in Louisville on our way to Indiana eating at Cincinnati's famous Skyline Chili restaurant. Of course they had the race on and we were able to watch history in the making. That's one thing I miss about the Bluegrass State - and Kentucky - is the horse racing.

It was so awesome to watch Rags to Ritches!!!!
IMHO - I think the fillies are way underlooked and the studs are more of the emphasis which is a shame!!!!! I agree Mel Sr. - and I've been watching horse racing since I can remember.

Ahhh the Skyline Chili. I tell you what, that is an aquired taste.

Took a while to get used to but then you crave it. I lived in Covington, KY for about two years while working in Cincinnati. Loved it there... and yes, very different vibe about the horse racing. I grew up in Illinois with Nascar on one side of my family and horse racing on the other (that side was from Kentucky).
Very, very cool about Rags to Riches.
But back to the chili - now I need a coney.

aaaahhhhhh We just got back from Indiana, and we know the exact stops for Skyline chili restaurants and Frisch's Big Boys......... yes, all the way up past Indianapolis down to Louisville.......... Nothing like a three way, a coney, and a pepsi........... ::sighs::
when did you live in Covington Shutrbug72? I lived there for 18 years and went to Northern Kentucky University.

Yes,she was beautiful!
Maybe fillies tend to be overlooked more ,but they also weigh less .Rags To Riches had a spectacular bloodline giving her an edge.I never overlook an A.P. Indy horse as a possibility.
To quote her trainer"You don't want to mess with her". She bites, she kicks, but is likeable which makes me think"Independent" right away.
That's a nice picture!
